In winter, this lake becomes the largest French plain lake and the second in Europe! When the rivers that feed it grow and get out of bed, as is the case with the Ognon, the Boulogne and its tributary la Logne, the lake of Grand-Place also increases, rises, swells and extends on the swamps that usually border it. Its area is about 3,500 ha and its depth of 0.65 meters on average in the summer, compared with 6,300 ha and a level of 1.50 meters in winter floods. Today, its 7,500 ha, classified, are the property of the local authorities. The legend says that the lake would have swallowed a city of debauchery and depravity named quoted of Herbauges. Today, it is said that the Herbauges bells can be heard on Christmas night… Flora and fauna are very rich, and are classified among the greatest heronries in France. Lake Grand Place is classified as a National Nature Reserve and houses almost 270 species of birds, as well as outstanding botanical species. Part is reserved for professional fishermen in Passay who use small boats called plates. They catch tannes, eels, sandres, pike, nets and bolts, and the last part belongs to individuals. Until 1980, the lake belonged to the Guerlain family.
