Chapel located in the center of the ancient village of Penchâteau, dedicated to Saint Julien, the oldest monument of the commune
When one comes to seek the sun, the beaches and the sea on the peninsula, one is far from thinking that this territory is, thanks to the wealth formerly provided by the salt trade, a patrimonial jewel of historical Brittany. The Sainte-Anne chapel, its furniture and its calvary are worthy representatives of this.
This building, with its elegantly sober exterior, is located in the center of the ancient village of Penchâteau le bien nom (pointe du château), which had succeeded a fortified site occupied since the5th century B.C. Actually dedicated to Saint Julien, it is probably the oldest monument in the commune and in its present form, it has been dated to the 15th century. Its southwest portal and its ogival window with mullions are remarkable. Inside, one can admire the beautiful frame, but also a monolithic font, polychrome wooden statues from the 16th century and other treasures.
In its immediate environment, a very beautiful Breton calvary of the same period, of a simple and moving beauty, stands out. This calvary comes from the old cemetery of Pouliguen. The chapel has been listed as a 15th century monument since 1925, as well as the calvary on the square. If you go there in July and August, guided tours will be offered by the association "Greniers de la mémoire". The chapel also hosts art exhibitions and concerts, so that history and culture can mingle.
