Church built in part in the 11th century and having the architectural characteristics of the time in Moutiers-en-Retz
Saint-Pierre Church was partly built in the 11th century and has the architectural characteristics of the time, namely sloping buttresses and round-headed windows. A second part was built in the middle of the 16th century. The structure of the nave is built like an inverted ship; unfortunately invisible, it was covered with panelling in 1827. Do not miss the large listed altarpiece dating from the 17th century, it is decorated with columns, architrave, frieze and cornice. Between the three parts of the altarpiece, two other niches contain the statues of St. Peter and St. Paul, each surmounted by a scallop shell reminiscent of the stopover on the road to Santiago. The central painting, restored in 1832, represents the "dation" of the keys to Saint Pierre, the saint's face was once the portrait of the patron Jean Le Jau. On the right is Saint Clement, patron saint of sailors. The three-masted mast suspended at the bottom of the church is an ex-voto of sailors in distress, which reminds us that Les Moutiers was a parish of sailors and that the sea was coming to the village. This church has been completely restored and completed in 2012.
