RIPOCHE ISLAND - MAUVES SUR LOIRE NATURE RESERVE
An island offering breathtaking views of its sandbanks, as well as protected insects, migratory birds and corncrakes.
To discover Ripoche Island, you will have to go to Mauves-sur-Loire, North-East of Nantes. One of the particularities of this island is that it is physically isolated from the mainland only during the periods of flooding of the Loire, in autumn and winter. The rest of the year, Ripoche Island offers a breathtaking view on the sandbanks of the river... Since 2006, this island of the Loire is the property for half (a little more than 4 hectares) of the department of Loire-Atlantique which endeavors to maintain it and to preserve it since, for the finest observers, one will be able to see the corncrake, a migratory bird or the alpine rosalia, a protected insect which has for characteristic to be one of the largest of Europe... To you the pollarded trees or the black poplars! Ripoche Island is an easily accessible place for pedestrian walks (and only pedestrian) thanks to a path, mowed annually and going around the island. The center of the island is preserved from this mowing. A beautiful site to admire the Loire differently!
