THE SAINT-JULIEN FOUNTAIN

It is necessary to find it because it is well hidden, this fountain, on the side of the road, in the bushes, not very far from the Roman bridge. Its water, called miraculous, was used by pilgrims who used to go to Santiago de Compostela. The origin of the legend dates back to the 4th century. A Roman officer, Julius, noticed during a stopover in Madilonium that the water from the fountain had a virtue to cure inflammation. The inhabitants of the village then called it: the Julien fountain.
The Saint-Julien fountain was built in 1710 by the rectors of Saint-Julien-de-Vouvantes and Mouzillon. It contained three niches: one for the Virgin, one for Saint Ferréol and the third for Saint Julien. Nowadays, thanks to a competition of good will, the Virgin has returned to the upper niche, Saint-Louis has replaced Saint-Férréol and Saint-Julien has found its place in its fountain.
