THE CATHEDRAL CRYPTS
The cathedral's crypts, revealing the mysteries so long hidden in Nantes.
After being closed for twenty years, the cathedral crypts are now open to the public in July and August, for the Heritage Days and on reservation with Nantes Tourism (0892 464 044). It is accessed by the Psallette garden, bypassing the cathedral's bedside. There, the crypts finally reveal their mysteries to us for so long. The most recent is Saint-Godard. Built in the nineteenth century, it houses between its ancient columns a moffen model of the cathedral and a historical exhibition devoted to the building. The high crypt, that of Guérech, was excavated in the eleventh century in a novel style. Under its ceiling consisting of vaults, stained windows in its walls lock chasubles, peaks and etches, some of which embroidered precious metals recall the fabulous riches of the clergy. Before returning to the open air, you should not forget to admire the treasure of the cathedral (a collection of objects of worship) and, right next to it, the gracious Virgin to the Marble Child, which dates from the seventeenth century.
