The Municipal Archives, an institution that participates in the constitution of the memory of the City of Nantes.
If Jacques Frémon du Bouffay, mayor from 1679 to 1682, actively participated in an effort to organize the archives by devoting the last two years of his mandate to carrying out an inventory, it was not until the appointment of the archivist Hippolyte Etiennez in 1848 that his organization was truly effective. Today, various series are kept there: constitutive and political deeds of the municipality, taxes ("register of accounts of a recipient and stacker of the common funds of the City"), military affairs, politics ("Arrest of the King's State Council", electoral lists), logbook of the whaling ship "Le Nantais", etc. The institution's role is to participate in the creation of the City's memory and to disseminate it by organizing, for example, educational and cultural activities. The archive also manages a photo library of more than 30,000 photographs.
