The only island in Loire-Atlantique, Piriac-sur-Mer is a major bird sanctuary.
Dumet Island is the only island of the Loire-Atlantique. It is located 7 km off the town of Piriac-sur-Mer. It is a very important bird reserve. On the 8 ha of the island which belong to the coastal conservatory, live cormorants, gulls, tadorns... It was reputed to be a paradise for certain species of birds which have deserted the site because of the excessive presence of gulls. Dumet Island is recognized as a Natura 2000 site. Two forts protect this island: the fort de Ré and the fort Carré, also called fort à la Vauban.
