A pleasant place to walk, which constitutes a vast wetland of more than 2,000 hectares parallel to the Loire River
The stéphanois marsh is a pleasant promenade. With the marsh of Coüeron, it constitutes a vast wetland area of more than 2 000 hectares parallel to the Loire. It is a beautiful set of wet and flood meadows (especially during the large tides in winter). The regular overflows of the river encourage the development of a flora that tolerates salt, so called subhalophile. Approximately 120 farmers operate these marshes by mowing or grazing for meat production. The herds are moved to higher land during flooding. The first mentions of the construction work in these marshes date back to the Middle Ages and are made by nuns who wanted to enhance the islands and the shoreline of the river. A new phase of asséchement begins in the th century to reach the th to the current marshes. Hydraulic regulation is complex - via étiers and channels - with regard to distances to be travelled for water. A variety of hiking paths are available on foot. The Angle Loop (15 km - 4 h 30 - orange markup), the loop of the Etang Bernard (14 km - 4 h 30 - purple markup), the Reilly loop (9 km - 2 h 30 - pink markup). Departure from the Tourist Office, place de la Mairie.
