REGIONAL NATURE PARK OF BRIÈRE
This natural park boasts a remarkable diversity of flora and fauna, as well as a unique landscape with salt marshes.
The Brière Regional Nature Park covers an area of 490 km², including 170 km² of wetlands, and is spread over 21 communes. Its flora and fauna are rich and remarkable. The Brière Regional Nature Park boasts a uniquely rich landscape. The wetlands, with their reed beds, mounds and bodies of water, represent the rural bocage landscape. The salt marshes, meanwhile, are exceptional landscapes in their own right. La Brière is one of France's very first regional nature parks, and was created in 1970. The aim of the park's creation was to be a pioneer in sustainable development. Thanks to the park's actions since its creation, improvements have been made in a number of areas. These include support for the use of thatch in new construction and renovation of thatched cottages, traditional marsh habitat, maintenance and restoration of canals, the creation of an environmental education center, the organization of various events (such as local produce markets) and the creation of a network of hiking trails. La Brière boasts an incredible diversity of flora and fauna. You can fish for eels and pike, and observe the Nantes bluebird and the white spoonbill. A visit to the Brière is a must for any stay in the département. Come and discover its extraordinary landscapes and animals!
