Dike to protect valuable crops and homes from flooding in Saint-Julien-de-Concelles, France
One of the prettiest strolls around Nantes for this tourist spot where guinguettes and Loire restaurants line up. The cuisine served here highlights the region's produce. As early as the 19th century, the quality of the Loire sand and the climate favored the development of market gardening (cultivation of lamb's lettuce, radishes, leeks and carrots). Lily of the valley, grown on these lands, accounts for 85% of national production. To protect these crops and houses from flooding by the Loire, a 16-kilometer dike, the Divatte dike, was built in 1847.
