THE LOIRE ISLANDS
The islands of the Loire are one of the places not to be missed in the agglomeration
A green lung of 140 hectares, the Loire Islands are one of the most important places in the agglomeration. In Saint-Sébastien, they offer a remarkable natural space for leisure and walking with their very open landscape: meadows as far as the eye can see planted with ash, willow and oak trees. Classified as a natural area, under Natura 2000 protection, the islands are swept by the winds from the Estuary. One can observe the little egret, the kingfisher, the heron... Until the end of the 18th century, San Sebastian looked like a small Venice. The archipelago consisted of seven islands, three of which have been preserved: Pinette, Heron, Forget. Where the springtime guinguette Station Nuage is located. The others form Beaulieu, the urban district of today. The islands of the Loire are appreciated by nature lovers but also by sportsmen. Pinette Island is home to an equestrian center, a golf practice, soccer and rugby stadiums, and a health course. Forget Island is home to a cross-country track. Both are linked by a footbridge and regularly host festivities organized by the City. A great place for walks and picnics. Heron Island is closed to the public and is a wild territory dedicated to the fauna and flora of the Loire.
