A cross adorned with precious stones in the Girouardière chapel, symbolizing the Liberation and the history of France.
One of Baugé's most beautiful treasures has been in the Girouardière chapel since 1740, the "true" Anjou cross richly decorated with precious stones. A fragment of Christ's cross brought back from the Holy Land in 1244 by a Baugean crusader. A century later, the relic was decorated with precious stones by the goldsmiths of King Charles V. This Christian cross, to which was added a small upper crosspiece representing the sign that Pontius Pilate allegedly had placed above Christ: "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews", will become the famous emblem of the Dukes of Lorraine in the time of King René. It is also a well-known symbol of the Liberation, the Lorraine cross that the airmen and sailors of free France wore on their uniforms. This relic was purchased by Anne de la Girouardière, the founder of the congregation of the "Daughters of the Heart of Mary". It is a true symbol of the history of France.
