DURTAL CASTLE
This castle is a beautiful example of the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance
Built by the de Jais family in the 15th century, this castle is a fine example of the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance and, although it was never a royal estate, the kings of France often visited it during their hunting trips in the Chambiers forest. But the place has also known dark hours: it is there that the St. Bartholomew's Day massacres are said to have been fomented... The guided tour, which includes an explanation of a large gallery decorated with 17th century frescoes and one of the largest fireplaces in Europe, lasts about an hour.
