Castle full of history with ramparts, fresco, medieval kitchen, stairs, defense towers and several hectares of vineyards
The massive yet finely chiseled structure of one of the finest châteaux in the Loire Valley can be seen from afar. Built in the time of Hugues Capet by one of the king's loyalists, Foulque Nerra, Count of Anjou, the Château de Montreuil-Bellay endured the Hundred Years' War, successive sieges, the Wars of Religion, the French Revolution (when it was a prison for monarchist women) and the First World War (when it was transformed into a hospital). Today, you can discover its history on a self-guided tour of the interiors, gardens, canons' lodgings, kitchens and ramparts. You'll learn that the massive former keep was dismantled to reuse its stones for other buildings. Inside: monumental frescoes, staircases, medieval kitchen, bedrooms, dining room and furnished music room... The outside can also be visited: 650 meters of ramparts, defensive towers and covered walkways offer an exceptional viewpoint: ideal for not missing anything of this castle combining the characters of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The castle also offers a special tour of its "bowels" to learn more about the building's defensive function. Last but not least, the fortress boasts several hectares of vineyards, producing Crémant de Loire and Cabernet d'Anjou, which can be tasted or purchased on site.
