Built around 1450 in the bed of the Loire by Jean II de Chambes, advisor to Charles VII and Louis XI, and associate of Jacques Coeur, the Château de Montsoreau's Gothic-Renaissance architecture is truly impressive. It is the first Renaissance château in France, and the only Loire château built in the bed of the Loire, on Mont Soreau, a stone's throw from where the Vienne joins the Loire, at the crossroads of Anjou, Poitou and Touraine. More than 150 years after Alexandre Dumas, author of La Dame de Montsoreau, art collector Philippe Méaille fell under its spell... He took the initiative of creating a museum of contemporary art, with outstanding architecture and exhibition spaces. It's a radical, committed place, a temple to conceptual art, combined with a cultural program reflecting the creative expression of some of today's artists. Innovative, experimental, exciting for some, disconcerting, incomprehensible, questionable for others, always unexpected, the works presented in the château's vast halls leave no one indifferent, provided they have a particular sensitivity to contemporary creation. The Château de Montsoreau - Musée d'Art contemporain is the world's largest collection of works by the Art & Langage movement. It hosts two or three temporary exhibitions a year, as well as conferences.
