SLATE MUSEUM
Museum with a demonstration area, a site retracing the history of the extraction and manufacture of slate in Trézalé.
In the heart of the old slate mines, the museum traces 600 years of history, from the extraction of this natural material to its manufacture. Those who were then called "fendeurs" cut it relentlessly and thus shaped the landscape of our region, making its inimitably colored roofs a strong component of its identity. Labelled "Musée de France", "Refuge LPO" and "La Loire à vélo", among others, the establishment offers a unique testimony on the production techniques of this rock and its uses through the different exhibition rooms and the slate splitting demonstrations performed by a former splitter. The scenes of a trade that has disappeared, played in the museum's amphitheater, offer a journey back in time, in the heart of the Angevine lands. On certain days, children can even learn about cutting techniques with an instructor and, during the school vacations, the museum offers educational and fun activities for children. The park itself is worth the detour because it is classified as a remarkable heritage of Anjou. To discover the typical landscapes of this activity, such as the old bottoms or the slate mounds, you can follow the footpaths that border them (4 km), or walk along the Authion (a tributary of the Loire shared by Maine-et-Loire and Indre-et-Loire) for an 11 km walk. The association that runs the museum also offers rides on a gyro-pod (about 2 hours), a nice initiative to combine modernity and tradition.
