THE PRIORY OF SAINT-RÉMY-LA-VARENNE
A priory renowned for its chapter house, ancient Romanesque frescoes and astonishing sculpted decor, painted in the Renaissance period.
Founded in 929 by Foulques I, this Benedictine priory was one of the richest in Anjou, thanks to its agricultural activities and its rights over Loire boats. Classified as a historic monument after the French Revolution, it features remarkable Romanesque frescoes in the chapter house and exceptional Renaissance decoration in the prieural dwelling, such as the monumental sculpted fireplace. Its facades also feature beautiful medallions. Every autumn, the famous Hortomnales showcase over 120 varieties of cucurbits. In summer, theatrical tours and other events enhance the discovery of this historic landmark.
