Brissac, of both medieval and Renaissance style, is the highest castle in France with 204 rooms.

The castle of Brissac (15 km from Angers) is the highest castle in France. Its seven floors earned it the nickname of "Giant of the Loire Valley". The ancient castle of the 11th century has been rebuilt and restored over the centuries in order to preserve the historical testimony of this impressive residence. Both medieval and Renaissance in style, it now has 204 rooms, most of which are still inhabited by its owners, the family of the 14th Duke of Brissac. The visits, free and documented or guided (count approximately 1h15) allow to discover a rich interior in excellent condition. Starting from the large living room, where furniture, paintings and photos are exhibited, you will then be led into the dining room where a table has, it seems, remained set since the dukes' greatest receptions. Were you expected? Going upstairs, you wander through the painting gallery and the reconstructed rooms, before arriving in a private theater with a hundred seats dating from the Belle Époque. The visit continues in the cellars of the castle, where a wine tasting will be proposed to you, before joining the park with its flowered alleys and shaded by hundred-year-old trees: magnificent! Don't miss the store and the tea room where you can prolong this beautiful day. Finally, if you have fallen under the charm of this domain, you can rent a room in order to take advantage of its exceptional setting and its ideal location between Angers and Saumur.

Seven floors and, it seems, two hundred and four rooms (not, I did not allow them)! Charles de Cossé was not a lazybones when it began to build this colossal castle. Still inhabited, it has an interior richly restored with a selection of furniture, tapestries, old masters and a collection of porcelain that you should not miss! My favourite goes to the small theatre Belle Epoque whom this fortress has: a little gem in the style of the 17th century.
