MONTSABERT CASTLE
The only castle of Coutures still standing, the first floor and the floor with temporary exhibition and the gardens to visit
Halfway between Angers and Saumur, visit this fortress from the Hundred Years' War, the only castle in Coutures still standing. In the 14th century, Bertrand du Guesclin redesigned the Château de Montsabert, after receiving it as a gift from his second wife, Jeanne de Laval. The original building, dating from the 11th and 12th centuries, was then transformed into an imposing fortress. Throughout history, the double enclosure disappeared and the castle underwent many transformations. Restored in the 19th century by the Angevin architect René Hodé, it now has a significant architectural difference in some respects, between an austere tower dating from the feudal period and an elegant Renaissance building. The ensemble offers beautiful carved details from all periods. During the visit, you will discover the gardens, the ground floor and the second floor of the castle, which still houses a temporary exhibition.
