LE PILORI - ESPACES D'ARTS VISUELS
Musée Lapidaire et Numismatique from 1887 to 1987, now home to the Espace d'arts visuels, a contemporary art gallery.
Built between 1530 and 1535 on 14th-century foundations by master mason Mathurin Berthomé. This typical Renaissance fortress housed Niort's town hall until the French Revolution. At that time, the mayor had the right to dispense justice, and therefore to condemn offenders to the pillory; 2 iron collars are sealed to the building's facade. A Lapidary and Numismatic Museum from 1887 to 1987, it now houses the Espace d'arts visuels, a contemporary art gallery.
