Inaugurated in 1892, the Gare du Sud, then known as the South Railway Station, was a point of convergence between the Côte d'Azur coastline and Upper Provence, the Dauphiné, the Haut Var and the Durance basin. Closed in 1991, the station was involved in various rehabilitation projects. The aim of the selected project was to create a living space, in the form of a contemporary market hall, where the people of Nice and tourists could eat, dine, have a drink or listen to music.
In May 2019, the project was completed. Expectations were high in this cosmopolitan and constantly changing Libération district, and hopes were not disappointed. Entirely dedicated to gastronomy, vintage and culture, the Gare du Sud station is rising from its past ashes, younger than ever, more offbeat, lively, artistic and truly gourmet. The first hall of its kind in France, similar to the Anglo-Saxon Mall, it surfs on a growing wave of trendy enclosed places where it is good to meet up to enjoy the pleasures of life and the table.
Restaurants, market, cinema, library, housing and shops are concentrated in a fantastic architectural setting, a tribute to the local heritage, a nod to Art Deco and the Belle Epoque. In front, the station square has been preserved and restored. It overlooks a tramway station linking the north of Nice, Place Massena and the old town. Inside, even at rush hour, it does not feel cramped. The impression of space, made possible thanks to the mezzanines, huge bay windows and the materials used (marble, wood, glass, metal) provides a bright, peaceful, relaxed atmosphere, conducive to strolling.
Among the thirty or so gourmet shops in the Gare du Sud, all the cuisines of the world are represented in the 1,500 m2 of ground floor space and the 1,000 m2 of mezzanines: specialities from Nice, Japan, North Africa, India, Italy, Nordic countries, Lebanon, meat, burger and truffle restaurants, oyster bar, wine bar, tex-mex, coffee shop, ice cream parlour, snack bar... There is something for every taste and every desire!
Open Tuesday to Friday and Sunday from 11am to 11pm; Friday and Saturday closed later at midnight. Closed on Mondays.
