Aix-en-Provence is home to the only true noh theater outside Japan. Entrusted to the city in 1992 by the Kano family, including Noh master Tanshu Kano, the Japanese dramatic art is a " living national treasure ". Located since 2015 in Parc Saint-Mitre, the honbutai is a 6 x 6 m structure made of Japanese cedar, with its emblematic pine tree behind the stage. It's on this open-air public stage that noh troupes express themselves, singing, dancing and often declaiming masked, to the sound of four instruments: a bamboo transverse flute and three drums. Every year, at the end of May, the Théâtre Nô-Maître Kano association organizes Printemps du Japon, a tribute to Japanese culture.
