JOSEPH SEC MONUMENT
This Jacobin and Masonic monument designed by Joseph Sec is a rare vestige of Aix's revolutionary architecture.
Joseph Sec (1715-1794) was a wealthy master carpenter and timber merchant, who was also a Jacobin and a gray penitent of confession. His eponymous cenotaph is a rare example of revolutionary architecture. It features the personification of Europe, symbol of freedom, and Africa, symbol of slavery. A statue of the Law sits atop the building. The garden also features seven large statues illustrating passages from the Old Testament. A must-see if you want to understand Aix's republican history!
