STAIRCASE OF THE HOTEL DE CHÂTEAURENARD
A winding staircase inside a mansion, a priori, has nothing exceptional. However, the only exceptional thing is its trompe-l'oeil decoration by the painter Jean Daret. These sculptures as well as the marble decorations are only visible by the effect games of the trompe-l'oeil. Baroque style, this staircase was admired by Louis XIV in 1660, during his stay in Aix-en-Provence. At the top of the wall, you can see a winged Minerva which seems to come from the sky, framed by the allegories of the liberal arts: music, rhetoric, geometry and astronomy are represented, a window is opened to the outside, and a boy seems to watch you from behind a curtain, surrounded by statues without apple... During the renovation work a descriptive panel is visible at the Estienne de Saint-Jean Hotel which houses the museum of the old Aix, at the opening hours of the museum. It is located at 17 in the same street.
