THE BASTIDE OF JAS-DE-BOUFFAN
One of three Cézanne sites that can be visited by reservation at the Aix-en-Provence tourist office.
It is one of three Cezannean sites. Famous painting by Paul Cézanne, the Bastide du Jas (1876-78, oil on canvas, 59 x 71 cm) also refers to the Aix residence where the painter lived. It was a place of life and a studio where the artist's first works were produced and from which he drew inspiration until 1899. Listed in the inventory of historical monuments, the bastide and its park have been open to the public since 2007. Despite a highly urbanized environment and the proximity of the motorway, the place has retained its charm. You can see the bastide dear to the painter's heart, and the park that inspired some of the paintings he painted at the beginning of his career. The lion- and dolphin-shaped gargoyles, the avenue of chestnut trees and the views of the Aix countryside from the terrace are easily recognisable. In the large living room, Cézanne painted twelve large compositions directly on the walls, which were detached from 1912 onwards. However, the original works can be viewed through the audiovisual system. The visit of the Bastide is by reservation at the tourist office. It is a 45-minute guided tour. To get to the Bastide, you can use public transport. If you use your car, please note that there is no parking on site. You will have to look for a parking space in the neighbourhood... Not very smart!
