MIGNONETTE'S CASTLE
Romantic castle with plane trees, named after the first owners, one of those reflecting the Aix spirit of the 18th century
Mignard, mignardise... The castle takes its name from its first owners: Gabriel and then Sauveur Mignard, confectioners. This country house is one of the most representative of the Aix spirit of the 18th century. At that time, people liked Italian-style villas with French-style gardens. To do this, water was needed, lots of water, and the Pinchinats district (combing in Provençal) was abundantly supplied with it. The townspeople came there in search of coolness on summer days. It is said that this abundance would have greatly displeased Pauline Borghese, Napoleon's sister, who had the ponds beaten to silence the frogs! She sought rest there with her young lover from Aix: Auguste de Forbin. Today it is a romantic castle, listed as a historical monument, flanked by magnificent plane trees several hundred years old, which dominate a garden decorated with French-style ponds and statues. The main facade, pierced by 27 windows, does not lack elegance. The interiors reveal beautiful antique furniture and many treasures, including this Chinese lounge with a precious hand-painted paper representing the cultivation of rice.
