BLACK CASTLE
A private castle nestled in the vegetation, the painter Cezanne rented a room there between 1887 and 1905 to store his equipment
Is it called "Château Noir" because the facades were painted with charcoal, or because its owner set up an alchemist's laboratory? All Cézanne lovers are tempted to discover this castle where the painter rented a room between 1887 and 1905 to store his equipment as close as possible to his outdoor peregrinations. But the door remains closed and well guarded. The building is now private and hidden in the vegetation. The successive owners have been forced to defend themselves from the constant harassment of overly curious tourists. Cézanne tried several times to buy the castle, but when the owners refused, he decided to build his studio at Les Lauves.
