KING RENÉ'S FOUNTAIN
Majestic fountain in Aix-en-Provence, whose tall statue dominates the Cours Mirabeau
The Cours Mirabeau is dominated by a tall statue of King René, Count of Provence in the 15th century - in fact, it's a portrait of Louis XII sent by sculptor David d'Angers. The statue dates from 1823 and depicts him with a scepter and a bunch of grapes, as he was a patron of the arts, and also gave great impetus to livestock breeding and agriculture. This king, who was said to be wise and kind, had his castle in Tarascon, which - a rare occurrence - was never attacked.
