More than folklore, the Arles costume festival is deeply rooted in the Mistralian traditions of Provence.
In Arles, the most beautiful Provencal and Camargue costumes are on display every first Sunday in July. On this occasion, more than 500 participants parade through the streets. Born in 1903, under the impetus of Frédéric Mistral, this celebration originally invited all young girls to take a ribbon and a dress, symbolizing their passage to adulthood. Concerned about the future of the Arlesienne costume, the poet wanted to make it official, so that the wearing of the "lady" costume would be a symbol, but also an honour and an event.
