Roman Cryptoportiques, impressive multi-purpose underground galleries beneath today's town hall.
Built in 40 B.C., the cryptoporticoes served as a base and stabilizer for the Forum's esplanade, located on a sloping ground. They consist of three U-shaped galleries, closed on the west, 89 meters long and 59 meters wide. The southern gallery is dug into the rock, while the northern one is in an area filled in by several meters. In the5th century, the cryptoporticoes were divided, used as a cellar, then as a dumping ground... A refuge during the Second World War, their definitive clearing dates from 1951.
