CAMARGUE NATIONAL NATURE RESERVE
Réserve de Camargue, one of Europe's largest wetland reserves, with its rich fauna and diverse landscapes.
The Camargue National Nature Reserve is located on the Mediterranean coast, inside the Rhone delta, on three communes: part of those of Arles and Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône and all of that of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. It is an astonishing patchwork of colors and different environments: from one hectare to another, its appearance changes completely. We walk near the pink waters of the salt marshes, we go through the plains by small dirt roads, we turn a corner and we are in front of an immensity of water where flamingos, the stars of the region, are frolicking, but also egrets, gulls and herons of different species. With a bit of luck, you can even see a stork... The Camargue is also, of course, the horses that the classic movie Crin Blanc has contributed to make legendary. We still see groups of wild horses moving freely in the natural park. And how not to mention the bulls, powerful horned beasts whose black coat and muscularity impresses any passer-by, who would not want to confront such an adversary! However, it is the bulls that the matadors challenge in the bullfights, or that the participants in the férias tease in less bloody events. Other inhabitants live in this region: rodents such as coypu and beavers, amphibians, insects (among which the terrible mosquitoes - more than 40 species live there - whose roars disturb many an evening in the country!)
This territory is home to a large number of men and women who have tamed these superb lands: salt workers, bull herders..
Let yourself be carried away by the magic of its wide open spaces, from the flights of birds at dusk to the solemn, sun-baked calm of its great marshy plains: man is not a master, but an inhabitant among others of these protected places.
