LE CHÂTEAU FÉODAL DES COMTES DE PROVENCE
A veritable lighthouse set atop a gigantic rocky spur, this major edifice is located in Châteaurenard.
It's a veritable lighthouse, standing atop a gigantic rocky spur that has watched over the Vallée des Baux for centuries. From its gaunt grey stone silhouette, eaten away by time, we can imagine its past grandeur and power. The Château des Baux-de-Provence is indeed a major edifice, a landmark from which to dominate the plain as far as the eye can see. Its military function is unmistakable, and in the evening, when its ghostly profile is silhouetted against the setting sun, you can almost hear the clash of swords in response to the war cries of the combatants. Today, the château hosts exhibitions and, of course, numerous historical events. It's hard to imagine a more appropriate venue.
High up on the plateau overlooking the castle, real war machines - reproductions, of course - stand guard, waiting to be put into action. In fact, several times a year, you can attend shows in which they are put to use. Trébuchets, bricoles and couillards await the enemy, but above all the visitor, with open arms. Other nearby monuments are also worth a visit, such as the south-facing Saracen tower, the keep, the troglodyte houses and, of course, the village, whose alleyways are crowded with passers-by in summer. Discovering the Château des Baux is like taking a trip back in time.
