The Natural History Museum was created in 1819 by the Marquis de Montgrand, Mayor of Marseille, and the Count of Villeneuve-Bargemon, Prefect of the Bouches-du-Rhône. Built to the glory of water, science and the arts by the architect Henry Espérandieu, the Longchamp Palace has housed the Museum since 1869. The result of the Marseille canal built by Frantz Major de Montricher to divert the waters of the Durance, it is one of the most beautiful water towers in Europe. Marseille, a crossroads of cultures and natural spaces of Europe and the Mediterranean, offers with its Museum a showcase of 19th century architecture, as well as naturalist curiosities and exceptional heritage collections, reflecting the political, economic and scientific life of the last two centuries.
