It is one of the most pleasant boroughs to live in Marseille thanks to its many green spaces and friendly atmosphere. It consists of seven ancient villages perched on the hills of western Marseille. This immediately sets up a pleasant bucolic setting, almost like in the novels of Pagnol. Some of the most evocative places include Saint-Julien and Rue Pierre Béranger or Saint Barnabé and Rue Montaigne. On these heights of Marseille, there are pretty villas that belong to rather well-to-do inhabitants, usually descendants of owners who had bought farmland in this area. But the 12th district has also had a history linked to the clay industry as indicated by some streets in the Saint-Jean-du-Desert district, including the Faïenciers crossing. As for transport, the 12th district is rather well served. Line 1 of the tram stops there and line 1 of the metro serves it via the stations Saint-Barnabé and Louis Armand to the terminus of La Fourragère. In short, the 12th is really a nice borough, not far from the city centre.

What to visit Marseille?

When to go to Marseille?

The best time to go to Marseille is in the spring or fall, during the low season. Hotel and restaurant rates are much lower than in summer during this period and the beaches are almost deserted. As for the climate, it is ideal, warm but not too hot, and you can often swim from spring and sometimes until the end of November in autumn. Winter is the very low tourist season but the climate remains mild with the possibility of doing many hikes under the sun. The high tourist season is of course the summer, in July and August, the roads are crowded and the prices easily go from simple to triple. It is then necessary to book early if you want to have a place and not to lose all your savings. Marseille is indeed a city that is becoming more and more touristic and it is not only popular with the French but also with a great number of foreign tourists. If you go to Marseille in the summer, it is a good time for outdoor festivals and you can easily find a complete list of these festivals at the tourist office.
