Petanque is a veritable religion in Marseille, with its own official committee responsible for organizing local competitions.
The committee organizes the Bouches-du-Rhône championships. It accompanies qualified teams to the French championships and other official competitions. As such, it organizes and oversees the development of tournaments and marathons. It supervises, federates and issues licenses to the 200 bouliste clubs in the département - a good score for the tenth most popular sport in France. The committee provides information on qualifications and lists the many annual tournaments. The World Petanque Championships in August are particularly popular, with the newspaper La Provence as official partner. You'll also find contacts for local clubs and associations, as well as an exact science of the world of the perfect bouliste, as petanque and jeu provençal are not to be confused - the former being played between 6 and 10 meters apart, while the latter extends from 10 to 15 meters. Don't hesitate to enroll yourself or your children in a pétanque club, the region's king of sports! There's no age limit for starting to play pétanque, and there's no age limit for having fun with this discipline, which is much more than just a sport in the département.
