OPPIDUM DE VERDURON
An oppidum steeped in history, located in a district of the city, retracing the Celto-Ligurian occupation of Marseille.
The Verduron oppidum, located in the district of the same name to the north of the city, is one of the few surviving examples of Celto-Ligurian occupation of Marseille. Unlike the Saint-Marcel oppidum, the Verduron oppidum is freely accessible all year round. Easily accessible, you'll find yourself in the ancient Gallic village of the 3rd century BC, on a steep hillside. The many foundations of individual houses indicate a major occupation that ended at the end of the 2nd century BC. Its history is brief, and contemporaneous with that of Greek Marseilles. Discoveries made here are on display at the Musée d'Histoire de Marseille. The view over the bay of Marseille is well worth the detour!
