WOODEN CASTLE
Château Bovis, home to the Aix painter who painted the 2 examples of the Gulf of Marseille exhibited in Chicago and New York
When Cézanne fell in love with l'Estaque, what was to become a district of Marseille was still just a fishing village mixed with relatively recent industrial activity. To paint the harbor, the Frioul islands and, above all, l'Estaque, the painter from Aix-en-Provence took up residence in a room at the Chateau Bovis hotel. There, he discovered the wide panorama of the Gulf of Marseille and its islands. It was from here that he painted the two copies of Le golfe de Marseille vu de l'Estaque, now on display in Chicago and New York.
