BIBLIOTHÈQUE ALCAZAR BMVR
Since 2004, Marseille's largest library has been housed in a former music hall theater on the famous Cours Belsunce.
Founded in 1857, the Alcazar was originally an auditorium with a capacity of 2,000, and has hosted a host of artists including Yves Montand, Fernandel and Jacques Brel. Since 2004, it has become Marseille's most famous library, and one of the largest in France! More than 350,000 volumes, newspapers, CDs, DVDs and rare collections are on display on four levels and in a public area of 11,000 m². A lively cultural venue, it regularly hosts cultural events. The monument is a must-see both for its exterior architecture, recognizable by its orange-red entrance door topped by a wrought-iron marquee, and for its light-filled, state-of-the-art interior. Located in one of Marseille's most working-class districts (Belsunce), the Alcazar is a symbol that culture can be accessible to all! The library is part of Marseille's BMVR network, along with the Bonneveine, Merlan, Cinq-Avenues, Grognarde, Saint-André, Panier and Castellane libraries.
