Remains of the royal arsenal of the Galleys in Marseille with workshops where ships were built and repaired for 100 years
In this issue of Cours Estienne-d'Orves, you can admire one of the last remains of the arsenal that King Louis XIV had built in Marseille. While a first royal arsenal was built at the end of the 15th century, the construction of the new arsenal wanted by the Sun King began in 1666. At that time it covered some 10 hectares and was in operation for about a hundred years, with its workshops where ships were built and repaired. Thousands of people lived there at that time. The building in front of you dates from the end of the 17th century, when the arsenal was enlarged.
