VARIETY THEATRE
A former showroom and casino in the past and now a very popular movie theater in Marseille.
In the 19th century, this district was the epicentre of Marseille's nightlife. Today, the people of Marseille pass through here mainly on their way to work. The facade of this former spectale hall is astonishing. Today it is a popular cinema but was once a theatre and a musical casino of first importance. It was called the "Folies Marseillaises" in 1878. Operettas were performed there and even boxing matches were organised in the 1950s. The facade is admirable. Two medallions stand out with busts representing Alexandre Dumas and Jacques Offenbach. The engraved names are those of influential opera composers at the time of the building's construction.
