MUNICIPAL OPERA
A remarkable opera house in Marseille, France's most important hall of typical Art Deco architecture, a historic monument.
The Opéra de Marseille is currently the second-largest theater built in France after Bordeaux, and the most important Art Deco building in the country. In 1919, a fire destroyed the Grand Théâtre de Marseille, from which it took over. All that remains of the original building, constructed in 1787, is the Ionic peristyle and the façade wall. When the theatre was rebuilt, it was required that the new building be inserted between the four remaining walls, while preserving them. The work was completed in 1924. The exterior peristyle is topped by an attic embellished with allegorical bas-reliefs, and the entrance gates are adorned with bronze medallions. Inside, a large stucco bas-relief surmounts the stage, and numerous sculptures, ironwork and paintings were executed by local artists, typical of the Art Deco taste of the period in Marseille. Classified as a historic monument in 1997, note the beautifully restored facade, gates, interior and roof.
