ART PALACE
A superb Second Empire building in Marseille, whose façade pays homage to the great chapters of art history.
Surprisingly, this superb achievement of the Second Empire (1864) is very little promoted by the city and even often ignored by the people of Marseilles. However, it is difficult to miss this majestic palace, the work of the architect Espérandieu and initially intended to house the School of Fine Arts and the municipal library. Both classical and eclectic, the building's façade pays tribute to the great chapters of art history. Small bas-reliefs represent emblematic monuments such as the Athenian Parthenon or the Château de Chambord. The palace now houses the Conservatoire national à rayonnement régional, after having hosted the municipal archives.
