THE GOLDEN VIRGIN
The Golden Virgin is the name given to a statue of the Virgin Mary, located a stone's throw from the Saint-Charles station, at the corner of Voltaire and Liberté boulevards. Its location was not always here. The plans of this structure, of the column overhanging the statue, are once again the work of Henri-Jacques Espérandieu and date from 1857. Initially, the statue was inaugurated on land belonging to the Diocese, below the station. With the construction of the station's main staircase, the statue was moved to where it is today in 1922. The purpose of this statue is to pay tribute to the Immaculate Conception in a historically very Catholic city.
