The ancestral quarter of the city marseille, The Basket, feast every year in the course of Assomption the Virgin Mary. On this occasion, the ceremony begins in the splendid Byzantine Cathedral of the Major. After the mass of 11 h, the Virgin is brought through the streets of the Basket. Christians and Christian pilgrims accompany this procession and, as tradition desires, suffer their handkerchief on Mary's dress. A concert is given for the occasion at the Accoules church. This religious ancestral rite also attracts a whole host of bystanders and curious throughout the day.
