TOWN HALL
City Hall of Marseille of Provencal baroque style built in 1653 on the quay of the Old Port, housing furniture, paintings
Built on the Quai du Vieux Port in 1653, on the site of the former town hall where the city's merchants and consuls used to meet, this building is in the Provencal Baroque style. At the end of the 18th century, a second section (Pavillon Daviel) was added, thanks to the purchase of private houses that formed the backbone of the building. At the front, the Pavillon Puget, listed as a historic monument since 1948, now houses the mayor's offices. The façade features the figure of Louis XIV (the Sun King), who, in order to subdue the rebellious city in his day and keep a better eye on it, tore down the protective walls and built forts Saint-Jean and Saint-Nicolas. If you really want to see the interior of the town hall, its furnishings and paintings, don't miss the Heritage Days!
