TRINITY TOWER
A monumental tower which, rather unnoticed in the Panier district, had as vocation to take care of prisoners.
This monumental tower goes rather unnoticed in the Panier district. Wrongly so, because its historical importance is no longer in question. Wrongly considered to be part of the medieval fortifications of the city, it was in fact part of a religious complex belonging to the Trinitarian order. This order was created in the Middle Ages to take care of repatriating prisoners whose families were unable to do so financially. All around this tower was a monastery, a church, a cloister. Unfortunately, all of this has now disappeared. Unusual detail, a plaque inlaid in the tower at one of its corners makes it a remnant of an ancient Greek sarcophagus.
