MUSEUM OF AFRICAN, OCEANIAN AND AMERICAN INDIAN ARTS
Dating back to 1670, the hospice of Old Charity was intended to shelter vagrants and orphans, following a royal edict on «imprisoning the poor and beggars». Made of arched galleries and three rows of arcades, the classic th invoice hospice is somewhat austere. A chapel was built in the th century in Roman Baroque style. Restored, the architectural ensemble of this former leprosy leprosy, the numerous cloister galleries now houses a Polyculturel centre, the museum of Mediterranean archaeology, museum of African, Oceanic and Amerindian art (MAAOA), a library of art, a bookstore, a cinema, a house of poetry, a cafeteria. The MAAOA is located on the second floor of the centre of Old Charity. The museum, which brings together prestigious collections devoted to the arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas, seeks to reconcile the aesthetic and scientific approach of the first art object. These objects are most often testimony of missing or endangered cultures. The visit of this museum invites to go beyond the western references, and to meet the different universes evoked by the works presented. For children, on Sunday at 11 a. m., a 1-hour workshop was put in place (while adults visit): They will perform a game or a paper mask inspired by the discovery of the works exhibited in a collection of the museum (African or Mexican).
