ARCHIVES DEPARTEMENTALES
The departmental archives were created by the law of 5 brumaire An V (26 October 1976) which ordered that the head of the department be brought together all titles and papers dependent on deposits belonging to the Republic. The funds are composed of the old archives up to the Revolution, from administrations, courts and ecclesiastical institutions. Those gathered under Napoleon Bonaparte, from 1800, cover the last two centuries. For the contemporary period the centre collects and treats the public archives of the department and the notarial documents. These archives have taken place in very new premises located behind the Grand Théâtre de Provence. The reading room which also includes a documentary fund on the history of Aix-en-Provence is open to all. On simple presentation of an ID, you will be issued a free reader card. Archives are also a place of exposure and debate whose purpose is to enhance documentary heritage. For the exhibitions program, visit the archives site (attention, archives of Marseille also have programming). In general, there is an exhibition in the spring and another in the fall.
