OBSERVATOIRE DE MARSEILLE
The first traces of a scientific observatory in this place go back to the beginning of the eighteenth century! At the time, the Collège de Sainte-Croix benefited from a royal grant to install various instruments of measurement and observation. However, it takes its true dimension when it becomes a Royal Naval Observatory before falling back into oblivion at the end of the eighteenth century. It is the astronomer and mathematician Guillaume de Saint-Jacques de Silvabelle who reinforces his development at the site, including important results obtained with regard to atmospheric refraction, the measurements of certain planets of the Solar System, the observations of Venus, etc., followed by years of quality observations in astronomy and patiently meteorology. written in writing. During the nineteenth century many asteroids and comets are discovered from the observatory. In the early twentieth century, much of the equipment, which became obsolete, was renewed, and in the 1950 s light pollution and increasing competition of much more modern instruments, installed under other skies and other latitudes, led to the closing of observations. In the early 2000 s the observatory was definitively transformed to become the Marseille Astrophysics Laboratory (LAM). In this long history, there are a few instruments to discover and admire, thanks to the visits organized by the ANDROMEDE association, including the beautiful telescope installed under dome, dating back to the nineteenth century.
